Niagara Falls is one of the most powerful and breathtaking collections of waterfalls that I’ve ever seen. Watching thousands of gallons of water plummet over the rock ledges, crash in wild torrents, and tumble down the river is something that should be at the top of everyone’s USA bucket list.
If you’re looking to spend one fun-filled day on the New York side of Niagara Falls, you’ve come to the right place!
In this guide, I’m going to share my exciting one day in Niagara Falls itinerary. This jam-packed itinerary will take you to the very best views of Niagara Falls, spotlight the best tours, and even showcase some frequently-missed highlights near this spectacular destination!

Before diving in, here are a few highlights for planning a trip to Niagara Falls, NY.

Exciting One Day in Niagara Falls, NY Itinerary
Niagara Falls State Park
Start your day with a stroll around Niagara Falls State Park! Entrance into the state park is free but nearby parking usually costs around $10-$15.
Temperatures are typically chilly in the mornings – even in the summer – so it’s best to save the water activities for late morning or mid-day.
Many great observation points of Niagara Falls are viewable from the state park’s trails. The two best views of Niagara Falls from the trails are Prospect Point (prime view of American Falls) and Terrapin Point (prime view of Horseshoe Falls).
Walking around the state park, you’ll pass picnic areas, a restaurant, a visitor center, a garden, a rock climbing wall, a discovery center, an aquarium, and many great views of the falls and raging rapids. There’s enough to do in the state park to fill a half-day, but whenever you’re ready (and whenever it’s warm enough), I’d recommend getting wet! More details next.
Maid of the Mist Boat Tour
The Maid of the Mist boat tour is one of my favorite experiences at Niagara Falls! If you only get to do one tour in Niagara Falls, let it be this one!
With your Maid of the Mist ticket, you get to take a boat ride to the falls and access the two most spectacular viewpoints of Niagara Falls – Crow’s Nest and the Observation Tower.
While you wait for the next boat to depart, walk out onto the Observation Tower to get the most jaw-dropping views of the falls (from USA land). Since the Observation Tower juts over the Niagara River, you will get a front-row view of the spectacular American Falls. You might even feel the spray from the falls!
Once the next boat departs, it’s time to hop in and take the 20-minute Maid of the Mist boat ride to the falls. While the boat won’t go directly underneath the falls (the water is far too powerful), the helmsman will take you close enough that you will get DRENCHED! The wind from the raging water coupled with the intense spray had us shrieking with excitement. You’ll probably be tempted to do it again because the boat ride is way too short.
Once you disembark from the boat, I’d recommend taking the series of steps to the Crow’s Nest viewing platform and getting the closest views of American Falls! (Most people on our tour skipped this!) You’ll feel the powerful spray from the second largest of the three falls of Niagara.
IMPORTANT: Maid of the Mist boat tours typically run from April through October, but the best months to go are June, July, and August because you WILL get wet. You’ll want the air temperature to be as warm as possible!

Cave of the Winds
Calling all waterfall enthusiasts! You absolutely must embark on this exciting tour to the base of Bridal Veil Falls! It’s actually less of a tour and more of a “go-at-your-own-pace” self-guided tour.
After purchasing your ticket, you’ll take the elevator down to the gorge. Once the employee gives you a poncho, you’ll be free to walk around the viewing platforms and explore the base of Bridal Veil Falls at your own pace.
Even though you’ll feel the powerful spray shortly after donning your poncho, nothing will compare to what you feel standing directly underneath Bridal Veil Falls. The sheer force of the wind and water will knock you off your feet. It’s exhilarating!

Whirlpool State Park and Devil’s Hole State Park
Once you’ve walked around Niagara Falls State Park, viewed the falls from different angles, and experienced the Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist Tours, it’s time for your next adventure: hiking in nearby state parks!
Whirlpool State Park and Devil’s Hole State Park are just a few miles from Niagara Falls, so they’re easy add-ons for your one-day adventure. Both parking areas are free and are located off the Niagara Scenic Parkway.
These two state parks are separated by a 1.3-mile (one-way) hiking trail. If you’re feeling up to it, I’d recommend hiking the 1.3 miles from Devil’s Hole to Whirpool, or vice-versa.
The trail follows the Niagara River and all of its fierce rapids and swirling whirlpools. Its rapids are so fierce because this area is just a couple of miles downstream of the powerful Niagara Falls. As you hike the scenic waterfront trail, you’ll be treated to both vantage-point views and up-close-and-personal views of the river. It’s truly a fantastic hike!
NOTE: If you’d prefer, you can drive to both Whirlpool and Devil’s Hole and explore the parks separately!
Niagara Falls At Night
Finally, it’s time to cap off your one day in Niagara Falls with a visit to…Niagara Falls. Yes, again! The waterfalls look completely different in the evening, and that’s because they light up!
First, start by having dinner with a view at the Top of the Falls restaurant. This is the only restaurant overlooking Niagara Falls!
Then, once it’s dark, head to one of the overlooks and watch the waterfalls transform into a kaleidoscope of bright colors. Hundreds of LED lights in a rainbow of colors shine onto the falls. This is a magnificent way to end your one day in Niagara Falls!
What to Bring to Niagara Falls
- GoPro. Since this action camera is fully waterproof, you can capture footage of the waterfalls even as you’re standing underneath them.
- Phone with waterproof case. Unless you want to keep your phone in the car, I’d recommend getting one of these affordable waterproof cases. This case has an attached lanyard so you’ll never lose your phone.
- Sandals. You’ll want sandals for all the water activities – Cave of the Winds and Maid of the Mist Boat Tour – because you WILL get wet.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls, NY
If you want to camp near Niagara Falls, I’d recommend camping at Four Mile Creek State Park. This quiet park and campground is just 15 miles from Niagara Falls. Plus some campsites (like ours) face Lake Ontario!
